ENTRY DETAILS
Supported by SEAFANZ
New Zealand's Premier Digital Underwater Photographic Society
For all you macro geeks!
We are looking for good quality entries to show subjects in detail. Whether it be a fishy face, nudibranch, octopus, kelp stipe or koura, we want to see it in close up!
See the rules for the details on what 'close-up' means and remember the public are judging, so it might not be the best picture but the most appealing!
The brief is very loose so come up with your best ideas and best subjects! We do need some dialogue with your entries to describe your subject and what it took to make that shot! Good Luck!
Oceanz Portfolio
The Portfolio category is your chance to pick out your favourite photographs around a specific theme.
You will submit 5 photographs based on your chosen theme plus a short blurb describing the theme and any other interesting information you wish to share with the judges.
We are leaving the theme open to you - we want to see some of your great creative ideas. The only stipulation is that 4 out of your 5 shots should be underwater or split shot.
Hmmmm................... bet that's got you thinking!
Please see the Rules section on the Photo Competition page before submitting any entries.
If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch. Our details are on the Contact Us page.
Have fun & good luck!
Oceanz Wreck
Wrecks are a real passion of Shane's so we are excited to see what you can come up with!
This category is about all things rusty! A wreck is a ship, boat or its cargo which has be sunk, lost or abandoned in a NZ water body.
We have over 2000 shipwrecks in NZ, and they are a huge part of our maritime heritage. Through this competition we hope to promote the history, tragedy, intrigue and challenges of exploring our wrecks.
Good luck!
Oceanz Compact
You don't need a big fancy camera that does everything apart from washing the dishes to take some great pics!
The Oceanz Compact category is a chance for everyone whether just starting out or those with a bit more experience to get involved in the competition.
The great part is - any subject matter will be considered providing it's underwater or split shot so feel free to play around and have some fun with this one.
The top shots will be displayed and members of the public will have the deciding vote.

He also dived the WW1 German cruiser DRESDEN, shelled and sunk by the Royal Navy in 65-70 metres depth in Cumberland Bay at Isla Robinson Crusoe ,Chile. His book "Heading For Cape Horn" describes his adventures.
He moved to Australia in 1978, started his own company and became Scubapro USA's Australian distributor during the 1980s.
Previously in NZ he was a partner in Diver Services Ltd, a flourishing commercial diving, training and retail operation.
He's a keen wreck-hunter and diver and in 1994 co-discovered Sydney's "last" shipwreck ,the collier MYOLA lost since 1919,3 miles out from Long Reef in 48 metres depth.

Paul Trainor
Paul Trainor is an enthusiastic CCR diver and Instructor with a serious wreck diving addiction. Paul is originally from Ireland and has been living in NZ since 2005.
Paul was first certified as an open water diver in 1996 and developed an interest in technical diving in 2005 for a new challenge and as a way to spend more time exploring the many wrecks and scenic dive areas NZ has to offer, he is currently a TDI and SDI Instructor Trainer and KISS CCR & GEM Instructor.
Since 2008 Paul has been diving KISS rebreathers around New Zealand and in 2010 became NZs first KISS CCR Instructor. Paul currently trains doing the things that he is passionate about: Wreck Diving, CCR and GEM SCR diving as well as OC Decompression Procedures.
Anyone who has talked with him for more than a few minutes will quickly pick up on his passion and enthusiasm for diving and what NZ has to offer technical divers.
Ian Skipworth and Pete Mesley two experienced and talented photographers will hold a workshop at Oceanz designed to help you with your underwater photography skills.
They will share years of experience, hints and tips and assist you to take better images. Feel free to bring your gear along for some advice on setup and questions are welcomed from the audience.

Flagstaff are sponsoring this workshop and will have a Submerged Gallery _ Oceanz. This will be a great addition to the Photo Exhibition and highlighting our wonderful watery world!
Dave Abbott
Dave Abbott is an experienced underwater cameraman and producer whose filming assignments take him to wild and unusual locations all over the world, - encountering and filming some amazing wildlife, both above and below the surface.
Dave has a degree in Environmental science [Dip Marine], dive instructors and commercial skippers tickets, and has logged over 2000 hours filming and directing underwater shoots in New Zealand and overseas locations - as well as having been involved in scientific diving and subtidal bio-surveying of many of New Zealand's marine reserves.
Over the course of his filming career Dave has filmed in some of the most fascinating waters on the planet; including Sulawesi, Komodo, PNG, Palau, Yap, the Philippines, New Caledonia, the Coral Sea, Tasmania, Tonga, Fiji, the Kermadecs and all over New Zealand; - capturing footage of marine life as diverse as Seadragons and Sunfish, Manta rays and Orca.
His particular passion though is sharks, and he has over a decade of experience filming and diving with various shark species, including Bull sharks, Makos, Blues, Galapagos sharks and Great Whites, ...but it is the latter species that have become his obsession.
For the past 4-years Dave has been working very closely with our New Zealand population of White sharks while filming a documentary on this species and has spent hundreds of hours in the water with them - in fact more time underwater with this particular white shark population than anyone in the world. As well as filming for the documentary Dave has been contributing individual white shark IDs to Clinton Duffys research on population dynamics, and is setting up a Masters project looking at hierarchy, behaviour and the possible effects of tourism on this population.
Above water Daves film projects have been equally interesting, and have included dogsledding in Arctic Svalbard, stalking Brown bears in the salmon streams of Alaska, tracking elephant poachers in Tanzania, and filming bull-catching in the Outback.
His company, Liquid Action Films, specializes in both underwater and remote location adventure documentary filming and production.
Pete took his boat to the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary in 2009 to work with an International environmental activist group trying stop the Japanese whaling fleet. On 6 January 2010 in an incident that rocked the whaling industry and the world, his 18 ton powerboat renamed Ady Gil - was rammed by an 800 ton whaler. Pete then boarded the Japanese security vessel from a jet-ski in a daring night mission to present the captain with a demand for compensation for the loss of his boat.
His subsequent arrest, five months in a maximum security prison in Japan, and trial in Tokyo became one of the most infamous anti-whaling events in history, and shone a global spotlight on this barbaric industry.
In 2011, Pete has yet again galvanized a network of global volunteers to support his latest and probably most important challenge yet. His new organization, Earthrace Conservation, sees Pete and his team tackling missions to protect endangered and vulnerable marine species, preserve ocean habitats, and put a stop to illegal, unreported, unregulated and inhumane hunting and fishing practices.
Pete is a world record holder, reluctant star of Animal Planets Whale Wars, author of two successful books, (one written during his time in a Japanese maximum security prison) and most recently, founder of Earthrace Conservation, a new marine conservation group.
Hes been called a marine maverick but Pete began his career as an oil exploration engineer working in the North Sea and Libya. In 1997, he co-founded CamSensor Technologies, designing and manufacturing automated camera systems for controlling robots. In 2005, realising the impact fossil fuels were having on the environment, he swopped his desk for the oceans and began planning something big that would attract global attention to the potential for renewable fuels.
In 2008, after four years of planning, he and his team broke the global circumnavigation speed record in the worlds most recognised powerboat, Earthrace, using only 100% biofuel from sustainable sources.
Pete's passion for diving started in the cold English waters over 21 years ago. This is where his "Lust for Rust" was created and from then onwards he has dedicated himself to researching, finding, diving and photographing wrecks. With over 2000 + hours in-water experience spanning over 15 different countries, Pete has made diving a full time occupation. Originally from Zimbabwe Pete married a Kiwi girl and moved to NZ in 1994. As well as being a PADI Course Director, Pete is a Technical Diving Instructor Trainer, TDI Advanced Trimix Instructor, and CCR Inspiration Advanced Trimix Rebreather Instructor. Pete is one of NZ's most experienced Technical divers and Instructors. Nowadays his equipment of choice is the Inspiration CCR.
He's also been involved in many diving activities with significant experience in leading and being a part of expeditions to wrecks. One of his recent expeditions was where he was one of 2 stills photographers brought in for a National Geographic expedition to the HMHS Britannic. Being part of a team of 10 divers from all over the world diving the famous wreck!
In June 2000 he was involved with Tanya Streeters 90 meter variable ballast sled dive in New Zealand. Also featuring in the National Geographic series X-Force The Science of Diving. He has become more involved with planning and organising technical trips round NZ and the South Pacific.
Pete has also been the first to dive many NZ deep wrecks. The Port Kembla in 2007, 96m (cargo ship hit german mine in 1917) HMS Puriri in 1999, 2000, 2005 in 97m (a Kiwi minesweeper sunk in 1940's), RMS Niagara 2000, 2004, 2006, in 125m (a luxurious Ocean liner sunk by German mine in 1940's) He is also a veteran of the Mikhail Lermontov with over 300 hours inside the wreck!
He has also conducted expeditions and has experience diving in the Solomons, President Coolidge, Vanuatu, Truk Lagoon, Bikini Atoll, Sipadan Island, Borneo, Great Barrier Reef, Red Sea, Scapa Flow, Scotland, dived over 100 wrecks in UK, Fiji, Tonga, Cyprus, South Africa, Caves in Zimbabwe, ice diving in South Island NZ, Melbourne wrecks Australia, ,
An accomplished photographer and videographer, Pete has an appetite for finding new places, new wrecks and adventure! Pete currently works for himself in Auckland, NZ specializing in Diver travel both locally and internationally to a global divebase. His personal website is www.petemesley.com
